Throughout Vanessa’s life, she encountered several heartaches. Always a hard worker, Vanessa began working at the age of 19 and had the opportunity to move to North Carolina to begin a new career. Unfortunately, Vanessa faced major medical issues that rendered her unable to work - it was a significant life change, because according to her, “I worked all my life, until I couldn’t.” But this adversity in her life did not stop her from following her dreams of providing for her family.
A new chapter began when Vanessa heard about Habitat from a church friend. Vanessa applied to the Habitat program 3 different times before finally being accepted. Due to Vanessa refusing to give up on her dreams of becoming a homeowner, she and her son moved into their new home in August 2018!
Vanessa is the first person, in her extended family, to own a home. With a spirit of fortitude and unrelenting faith in God, Vanessa is quick to share that “I prayed and God said I could have a home, so I believed and continued to keep trying. God has blessed me so greatly….so many unexpected blessings.

In 2016, Manita decided it was time for a change in her life and was accepted into the Habitat Homeownership Program. Manita has been blessed with 3 beautiful children; twins, Amir and Amirah, and Mia. Manita stated that she “always wanted and dreamed of a place for me and my children to call our very own.”
Manita struggled with overcrowding and was unable to obtain a home without the help of Habitat. Once accepted into the program, Manita dedicated all of her available time to earning the required hours. Not only did Manita worked hard, her children did as well. Amir and Amirah together earned 75 hours from their good grades at Lincoln Charter and Mia earned several hours by participating in Habitat events. In total, Manita and her children went above and beyond the program requirements!
Spring 2017, the State Employee’s Credit Union (SECU) Foundation challenged all NC counties to build a home and find a homeowner and SECU would fund and service the entire mortgage. We were proud to announce that Manita was selected as our SECU Homeowner. Manita and her family moved in their new home before Christmas.
Maria Teresa applied to the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program in February 2015. The dream of becoming a homeowner and providing a safe, decent home for her teenage daughter proved to be harder than expected. Due to the family’s limited income, obtaining a conventional mortgage was not an option.
Maria Teresa displayed incredible passion and dedication to the Habitat Homeownership Program. She reached the required 250 sweat equity hour requirement by the end of 2016. Unfortunately, adversity soon presented itself - Maria Teresa, employed with the same company for over 10 and half years, learned that the company was closing its doors. However, this event did not dampen her dreams. She quickly found employment elsewhere and continued with the Habitat Homeownership Program.
Maria Teresa and her daughter successfully completed the program and achieved the dream of homeownership!

Rosanny worked diligently in the Habitat Homeownership Program in order to provide a home for herself and her two daughters, Anali and Leanna. After volunteering at the Habitat Office, helping construct her own home, participating in homeowner education and taking financial classes, her hard work paid off. Rosanny completed a total of 264 sweat equity hours and officially became a homeowner on November 23, 2016 with the help of James Hodges of The Pendleton Law Firm. Her heartwarming home dedication took place on November 13, 2016 when she and her two daughters cut the ribbon to their beautiful new home. We are so proud of Rosanny and all she has accomplished...we wish her the best of luck in her new life as a homeowner!

Sandy started her journey after acceptance into the Habitat Homeownership Program. She wanted to provide a home for her and her three beautiful children. Sandy and her family completed a total of 398 hours of sweat equity hours, attended 8 hours of homebuyer education and participated in Community Building through other organizations. Sandy became an official homeowner on February 10, 2016 with the help of James Hodges of The Pendleton Law Firm, who donated his time and efforts as her closing attorney.
